Seeing What Is Instead of What Is Not
Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do.
Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!”
Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up. “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”
John 6:5-9 NLT
Today, we have another snapshot into the life of Andrew, the disciple who was the older brother of Peter. Andrew is the one who brought Peter to Jesus in John chapter one. Today, we find Andrew bringing someone else to Jesus.
Jesus had been teaching and working miracles most of the day when he realized the people were hungry. He asked one of the disciples about feeding them. We know from the other gospel accounts the disciples made excuses about how impossible it was to try to feed a crowd of over 5,000.
But while others were making excuses, Andrew was bringing a boy with five loaves and two fish. Everyone else saw what wasn’t there—Andrew brought what was there to Jesus.
Because Andrew found the boy with the five loaves and two fish, we have recorded one of the most incredible miracles in the Bible. Jesus fed over 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish. And everyone ate until they were full, and then the disciples gathered 12 full baskets of leftovers.
Once again Andrew starts a chain reaction by bringing one boy with a sack lunch to Jesus. A chain reaction that fed thousands.
It seemed that Andrew was always looking for someone to bring to Jesus. Even though they may not seem important or special, they need to come to Jesus.
Because the boy gave up his lunch, he got 12 baskets of leftovers. There is no mathematical formula for that—five plus two divided by 5000 doesn’t equal 12 baskets of leftovers.
Holy Spirit, please help me to bring to Jesus everyone and anyone. I believe You can work miracles in every life and with every person. Show me who I can bring.
