Still Room for More

Jesus replied with this story: “A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations. When the banquet was ready, he sent his servant to tell the guests, ‘Come, the banquet is ready.’ But they all began making excuses. One said, ‘I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I have just bought five pairs of oxen, and I want to try them out. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.

“The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was furious and said, ‘Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’ So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full.”

Luke 14:16-23 NLT

Jesus tells this story to stress the point that God wants His house to be full. People will always find an excuse if they want one. But we have to be intentional about looking for those who some consider the poor, crippled, blind, and lame and inviting them as well into the Father’s house. God wants us to “urge anyone you find to come.”

Once we have been transformed by the love of Jesus, we are changed. The love of Jesus compels us to come to the Father. Then we are convinced of God’s transforming power. And, then we are changed forever. Once we have been compelled, convinced, and changed, we become committed to the task of telling everyone possible about the love of Jesus.

There are a lot of Sunday morning saints who are doing the church thing to look good to people or smooth over a troubled conscience. They haven’t experienced the truth of God’s love through Jesus that transforms us. Love that changes our priorities about how we use our time, talent, and treasure.

When we have been changed, we want to use our time, talent, and treasure to invite others to experience God’s love.

Holy Spirit, please remind me how God’s love has worked in me. Help me to have a fresh encounter with Your love. Help me to share that love with others.
