One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever. “Listen to this dream,” he said. “We were out in the field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine!”

His brothers responded, “So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them.

Soon Joseph had another dream, and again he told his brothers about it. “Listen, I have had another dream,” he said. “The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!”

This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. “What kind of dream is that?” he asked. “Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you?” But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father wondered what the dreams meant.

Genesis 37:5-11 NLT

What should God give a 17-year-old spoiled brat? I would personally think a really bad case of zits would help humble him. But God gave Joseph dreams—two dreams of having his brothers bow down to him. They are obviously dreams of God’s plan to exalt Joseph.

Joseph made a critical mistake with the dreams; he told his brothers and his father. The brothers got mad and hated him for his arrogance and pride. His father, who already had declared Joseph to be his favorite son, scolded him.

I believe God still gives dreams today. It is these dreams that keep us going in the difficult seasons of life. Sometimes, we are given dreams for us personally. We must wait for the right time to share our dreams with others.

When we are walking through tough times, I believe we can ask God for dreams. Those dreams inspire us and motivate us to keep going regardless of the present discomfort, confusion, or frustration.

Holy Spirit, I ask for fresh dreams. Help me to know what You desire for my life. Help me to listen to what You are saying.
