The Lord was with Him
The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned. From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the Lord began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished.
Genesis 39:2-5 NLT
Joseph’s brothers sold him to slave traders who took him to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar. Joseph was 17 years old. He could have easily become angry and bitter at the rejection of his brothers and now having to work as a slave in a foreign land. Instead, Joseph seemed to flourish in slavery.
Joseph applied himself to make the best of a bad situation. His personal plans for his future did not include being a slave in Egypt—but when he got there, he chose to be faithful as a slave.
I don’t know of anyone who has not had life take them down some unexpected curves and twists. Sometimes, it is a twist of physical health, financial stability, or relational disaster. Sometimes, the twists happen because of bad choices on our part. Other times, the twist comes because of someone else’s choice. But twists do come.
Flexibility in life is crucial to success in life. Learning to adjust to the twists of life will mark us for success. I believe the key is keeping a daily connection with our Heavenly Father. I believe the Holy Spirit can prepare us for things we don’t know about our future. He can work in us to create the capacity to adjust to the changes that He knows are coming.
Throughout Joseph’s life, one thing was common—the Lord was with him. Whether it was the pit, Potiphar’s house, or the prison, the Lord was with Him. God is with those who are with Him. When we commit our lives to the Lordship of Jesus, He is with us in the good, the bad, and the in-between.
Holy Spirit, I recommit myself today to Your kingdom and Your work in my life. I believe You are working in me. Help me to be flexible for whatever life throws my way.
