Rely on the Holy Spirit
And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.
1 Corinthians 2:4-5 NLT
Many people think they can’t talk to someone about God because they don’t have all the answers to the tough questions. This fear is why I love Paul’s statement to the believers in Corinth. Paul was well educated and had a great understanding of the Jewish scriptures. He had a personal encounter with Jesus and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Yet, Paul did not rely simply on his education to give him the words to speak. He said, “I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Paul said his purpose was so the people’s faith would not be in human wisdom but in “the power of God.” Human wisdom and ability will always have limits. We are limited in our understanding. This limitation is why we have to depend on the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit within us has insight into the heart of every human. The Spirit knows the pain, the hurt, the frustrations, and the struggles of every person. When we allow the Holy Spirit to speak His words through us, suddenly, our speech is touching the need of those to whom God has sent us.
Sometimes, the little words can have the most profound effect for good or bad. Words have power. Let’s be sure we allow the Holy Spirit to direct our words.
Holy Spirit, please direct my words. Help me to speak clearly what You want to be said. Empower me to be used by You to speak life into my world.
