Words of Wisdom

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.

James 4:7-8 NLT

There is so much in this passage to think about. I encourage you to read it out loud a couple of times so your ears can hear the powerful instructions James is giving.

“Humble yourselves before God”—this is where we start. We recognize we don’t know it all, and we can’t do it all. We are dependent on God to work in our lives. Without the Holy Spirit living and working in us, we are all miserable people.

“Resist the devil”—we can’t play around with the devil. He wants to mess up our lives, our marriages, our family, our finances, and our physical health. We must decide we will stand against any and all attacks he brings into our lives. Look for the little things—the devil loves to get us to compromise some “little” area, so he has a foothold to turn it into a big thing that becomes a habit and then an addiction.

“Come close to God”—our minds will avoid God when we aren’t living right. When we humble ourselves and resist the devil, we want to be in God’s presence. In the Garden of Eden in Genesis, Adam and Eve hid from God because of sin in their lives. We hide when we have sinned. When we repent and receive His forgiveness, we can enjoy the presence of God. There is peace, provision, wholeness, and clarity in the presence of God.

“Your loyalty is divided”—this may be the strongest statement. So many people seem to live with divided loyalty. They want to have a personal relationship with God and enjoy His benefits. But then, they also want to be able to do what they want to do. We can’t have Jesus as a part-time Lord.

Holy Spirit, help me walk out this passage today—and every day. Forgive me for being double-minded. Forgive me for allowing the devil to have a foothold in my life. Help me live in Your presence with no fear or shame.
