“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
Jeremiah 29:11 NLT
We live in a world of people who are living without a purpose or a plan. It might surprise you to know that one in five people today struggle with depression, often rooted in feeling purposeless. I am told that treatment frequently involves methods to reestablish the individual's sense of purpose, such as creating a routine, setting goals, taking on responsibilities, doing something new, or volunteering for a cause.
Everyone needs a reason to get up in the morning. We need to feel that there is a purpose behind our lives.
I suggest the best way to discover our purpose is to start by yielding our lives to the Lordship of Jesus, inviting the Holy Spirit to fill our lives and give us direction daily. I think it is essential to check our direction and purpose every day.
We have recently been going through a series of exercises in our leadership team to rediscover God's direction for our church's future. We are inviting different voices to speak into the process because we know there is wisdom in the multitude of counselors—as long as they are counselors who are led by the Spirit and don't have some selfish agenda.
In the same way, as an individual, it is vital to have Spirit-led people who speak into our lives, people who can help us see our blind spots and point out gifts and talents in us that might be hidden from ourselves.
Some people are blind to their weaknesses. Others are blind to their talents. We need godly people in our lives who love us and want the best for us. These people can help us discover the purposes God has already placed in us.
Holy Spirit, I want to know Your purposes and plans for my life. I ask You to show me people who can speak into my life. Help me discover the purposes and plans for which You have created me. Give me greater clarity than ever before.
