But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
John 14:26 NLT
Jesus is speaking to His followers about leaving the earth and sending the Holy Spirit. He has told them it is better for them that He go away so they can receive the Holy Spirit. He then begins to explain the working of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers.
In this passage, Jesus says that the Holy Spirit “will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” This is perhaps one of the greatest gifts the Holy Spirit brings to our lives—He is our Teacher. Perhaps, a great way to look at this function of the Holy Spirit is as our tutor.
When I think of Teacher, I think of someone who stands in front of a class and delivers information. The work of the Holy Spirit is more like a tutor—they customize the material to the individual student and work with them to understand the material.
Every believer has the Holy Spirit living inside of us. He is our personal Tutor. He is giving us the information we need when we need it. I have often had times when I didn’t understand something, and the Holy Spirit would suddenly “turn on a light” to my understanding.
This does not release us from personal study. We still have the responsibility to read the Word of God, listen to good teachers, and read good books. I believe the Holy Spirit most often tutors us by bringing to our mind the information that we have stored.
Imagine having access to a really powerful computer. But unless the computer has information loaded on it, there is no advantage in having the computer. If it can’t access the internet to search for information and no one has loaded the information on the computer, it is worthless.
I have most often had the Holy Spirit be my tutor when I am reading my Bible, a book, or listening to a message, and suddenly, one thought will just come alive in my spirit. It will be a moment when my understanding suddenly comes alive with a new application of the truth I saw or heard.
There have been other moments when I am praying or counseling with someone and a thought will pop into my mind. Often, the thought is something I read or heard but occasionally, I have no knowledge of how I got that thought. In either case, I believe it was the Holy Spirit bringing to my mind what I needed at that moment for that situation.
Are you giving the Holy Spirit something to work within your life? Are you listening to the nudge of the Spirit as your tutor?
Holy Spirit, I invite You to be my Tutor. I want you with me every day as I make decisions. Help me to load my mental computer with good stuff that You can draw from when needed.
