Looking and Listening

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

John 14:16-17 NLT

Jesus gives us more insight into the Holy Spirit when He tells us that He “will never leave you.” The Holy Spirit was given by the Father and the Son to be with us forever. Whether we are in good times or bad times, He is always with us. We are never alone.

And His job is to lead us “into all truth.” If we are searching for truth, the only way to find it is to listen to the Holy Spirit. He is our Teacher and Guide. He will direct us to the truth. Let’s listen to the Spirit as we read the Word of God. He will take the Word and enlighten it to our understanding.

Jesus reminded us “the world cannot receive Him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him.” What a great truth! We don’t see when we aren’t looking.

Years ago, I remember getting a particular white truck, and it seemed the day after I got it, everyone on the road had the same truck. Before I got mine, I didn’t see any white trucks like it. But once I had one, it seemed the trucks were everywhere. The truth is I never saw them, but once I started looking for them, they were everywhere.

Once we open our hearts with a desire to have the Holy Spirit working in our lives, we suddenly begin to see Him. We get those nudges and thoughts that are the Spirit talking to us. Then, we begin to listen because we are looking for His presence and direction.

Are you looking for the Holy Spirit? Are you listening?

Holy Spirit, I want to be sensitive to Your nudge in my heart. I want to listen to Your input in my life. I want to see You working in and through me.
