Did I keep my heart pure for nothing? Did I keep myself innocent for no reason? I get nothing but trouble all day long; every morning brings me pain.
Psalm 73:13-14 NLT
So I tried to understand why the wicked prosper. But what a difficult task it is! Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.
Psalm 73:16-17 NLT
Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.
Psalm 73:25-26 NLT
I really think the entire 73rd psalm is worth a read, but I just took some excerpts for our consideration today.
Have you ever felt like life is unfair? You are doing the right thing, and it seems like nothing good happens for you. Other people get a new job or promotion, and they are so proud and undeserving. Some jerk gets the girl you wanted, and you can’t see any fairness in that. You just saved enough money to get a newer car when your neighbor who is a total heathen gets one newer than yours.
Life on this side of eternity is not always fair. There are moments when it seems our decision to follow Christ and do the right thing goes unrecognized. We seem to get overlooked and underappreciated. How do we cope with the injustice of life?
The key is in verse 17— “Then I went into your sanctuary, O God.” That’s the key to making sense out of what doesn’t make sense. We go into the presence of God and get an eternal perspective to replace our temporary viewpoint.
When we spend time with God, we begin to understand that He is our strength and hope. We are not looking for a man to vindicate or reward us. We are looking to eternity as our reward.
Our hope is that someday Jesus will return to earth. Jesus will set the wrongs right. Jesus will rule and reign on this earth and then invite us to join Him for eternity in heaven. This is our hope.
Holy Spirit, I ask You to help me have an eternal perspective on my life. Help me rest in Your justice. You are the hope of my life.
