Full of Joy

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives.

Psalm 90:14 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

If you read the entirety of Psalm 90, most of it seems anything but joyful. But even in the difficulty of life, the psalmist asks God to release His unfailing love over our lives so “we may sing for joy to the end of our lives.”

Jesus wanted His disciples to be full of joy (John 15:11). Nehemiah told a tearful group of returned exiles that the joy of the Lord was their strength (Nehemiah 8:10). Paul filled one of his letters with joyful words and told his readers to rejoice in the Lord always (Philippians 4:4). David said the fullness of joy is found in God’s presence (Psalm 16:11). According to Scripture, our joy is a big deal to God.

While some people may have a better bend towards joy, it is a gift from God that is available daily to every believer. Part of the fruit of the Spirit being in our lives is joy. So, if I am a Spirit-filled person, I should have joy flowing out of my life.

I have found it is important to have a regular check-up on my joy meter. When I allow my life to get too busy with meetings and work, my joy drops. I must be intentional about feeling up my joy tank by spending quality time in prayer. I’m not talking about the prayer done while driving or doing something else. I’m talking about the behind closed doors prayer where everything and everyone is shut out, and it’s just me and the Holy Spirit. Giving God time to fill me up with His presence releases joy into my life.

Joy from God is not based on my circumstances. It is despite my circumstances. Paul wrote in the New Testament about joy while he was in prison.

How is your joy meter?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, I come to You today and ask for a fill-up of joy. I yield to Your influence and direction in my life. I ask for You to be my Teacher and Guide today. I want to be full of Your joy.
