Pride - The Beginning of Sin

Now Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon. So they sent a delegation to make peace with him because their cities were dependent upon Herod’s country for food. The delegates won the support of Blastus, Herod’s personal assistant, and an appointment with Herod was granted. When the day arrived, Herod put on his royal robes, sat on his throne, and made a speech to them. The people gave him a great ovation, shouting, “It’s the voice of a god, not of a man!” Instantly, an angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness, because he accepted the people’s worship instead of giving the glory to God. So he was consumed with worms and died.

Acts of the Apostles 12:20-23 NLT

Herod was the king who had James killed and Peter imprisoned. He was a wicked king who obviously had lots of pride. When he made a speech and the people praised him, he accepted their worship. But God chose to judge Herod with instant sickness that resulted in death.

Scripture is consistent in teaching that God hates pride. The Old Testament indicates it was pride that got Satan kicked out of heaven. Satan then came to earth and tempted Adam and Eve to sin against God. Pride was the very beginning of sin.

The New Testament tells us that God opposes the proud. That means God actually fights against those who are proud. But the same passage tells us God gives grace to the humble.

I want God’s grace, not God’s judgment.

Instead of taking the recognition of men, we should be living for the favor of God. God promised to handle the exalting of those who humble themselves.

Holy Spirit, search my heart and reveal to me any pride that will get in the way of Your work in my life. Help me to live to please You and not man.
