Faith is Action
How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless? Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God. So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.
James 2:20-24 NLT
Here is a thought: FAITH IS ACTION!
We get confused because we think faith is a mental agreement with some set of beliefs or doctrines. Faith is more than intellectual agreement. True faith is demonstrated by our actions. We must act on the information in order to really have faith.
Faith and actions work together to demonstrate what we really believe.
If I believe that God is my source and provider, then I don’t have a problem being generous when I see someone in need or feel prompted to give a gift that is larger than I normally would give. I definitely don’t have a problem with tithing if I believe God will supply all my needs.
If I believe God has good plans for my life, plans to prosper me, and give me hope and fulfillment, then I don’t have a problem trusting Him with my entire life. I seek His will in the big and little decisions of my life. I am willing to live differently from my society and not engage in behavior that is displeasing to God—even if others don’t understand.
I’m okay not being invited to some things, being shunned by some people, and being ridiculed by others. My self-worth is not in what others think or say because I draw these from my Heavenly Father. I can even love those who misuse and abuse me because Jesus teaches me to love my enemies. (I don’t think this means I allow intentional abuse to continue, it’s okay to love from the safe distance of proper boundaries.)
What actions do you need to take to express your faith in God?
Holy Spirit, please help me demonstrate my faith by my actions. Help what I do line up with what I say.
