Joshua then read to them all the blessings and curses Moses had written in the Book of Instruction. Every word of every command that Moses had ever given was read to the entire assembly of Israel, including the women and children and the foreigners who lived among them.
Joshua 8:34-35 NLT
After God reveals the sin in the camp and Joshua deals with the sin, God tells him to defeat Ai. Joshua is victorious, and the people are allowed to take the plunder from the city for themselves. Then Joshua builds an altar to offer sacrifices to God. He carves on stones the law of Moses and then proceeds to read the words of Moses to all the people.
This is a recommitment moment, a renewal of their covenant with God. Joshua is reminding the people of God’s instructions.
We all need those moments in our lives where we renew our commitment to the ways of God. I remember a book about “vision leak.” It talked about how easy it is in a church or business to start with a clear vision, but over time, the vision leaks. The organization gets busy doing stuff and even having success, but unless they have constant reminders of the vision, it leaks. Activities take place that don’t always line up with the vision.
The same is true in our spiritual lives. We can get caught up in religious work and activities and lose some of our dedication to the Word of God and the Spirit of God. Religion can replace relationship, and before long, we are just going through motions.
Perhaps, today is a good time to press the pause button and remind ourselves of God’s work of grace in our lives. Take a moment to say thanks by building your own altar to give God praise. Then allow the Holy Spirit to refresh your memory of the words God has given to you.
Holy Spirit, please speak to my heart today. Renew my passion for You. Help me to keep my mind and heart in line with You.
