Answers to Prayers
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.
James 1:5-6 NLT
There are two keys to getting answers to our prayers that are given in our passage today.
First, ask the right person.
I know that sounds ridiculous, but often we say a quick prayer to God for help and then run out and try to fix things on our own. While we may have given lip service to inviting God’s help and direction, we never really listened to Him. We were planning to do it our way all along. So, if I want to get the right answer to my prayers, I need to be sure I am asking God and listening to His response.
Second, I have to ask with the right attitude. The right attitude is faith in God alone. I have to ask with faith. That means I believe God can and will work on behalf of my needs. Faith is not manipulating God or telling Him what to do—I’m not smart enough to know what is best.
Faith is believing God will do what God deems best in my life in order to accomplish His higher purposes. Sometimes it is what I wanted. Other times it seems like a strange answer, but it is what God deemed best for me.
God’s ways and thoughts are higher than my ways and thoughts. I can’t trust my understanding. I can always trust God’s love for me and His desire to work all things together for my good.
Holy Spirit, please help me pray with the patience to listen as well. Help me have faith to trust that You are going to work all things together for my good.
