Our View vs God's View
But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
1 Peter 2:9 NLT
How do you see yourself?
Years ago, a wise person taught me that people will not consistently behave in a manner that is inconsistent with how they view themselves. I’m not talking about the way we want people to view us—often there is a disconnect between the way we want people to view us and the way we actually view ourselves.
We might want people to view us as strong, self-disciplined, and successful. But when we are alone, we look at ourselves as failures and flops.
How I see myself will always determine the way I behave. I cannot consistently behave in a manner that contradicts the way I view myself.
Because of how we see ourselves, it is crucial to have our minds renewed by God’s view of us. The world loves to put labels on us. Those labels become our identity if we are not proactive to develop a new identity in Christ.
God’s Word says the moment I surrender my life to be a follower of Jesus I am a new creation. I am chosen, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and considered God’s possession. I have been called out of darkness and into the light. I don’t live in the shadows of darkness. My life is an open book—not a perfect book but a book about grace. God’s grace has invaded my life and made me new. Daily I am living by the grace of God.
Holy Spirit, help me to see myself the way God sees me. Help me to allow You to determine my label.
