Living in Peace

Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!

Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.”

Romans 12:9-18 NLT

The end result Paul is shooting for in this passage is, “Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.”

The biggest peace stealers are often those who are closest to us. Our inner circle of family and friends can be a source of stress and anxiety. We have to work to establish peace in our relationships.

It all begins with deciding we will love and honor others. We have to practice patience, prayer, and hospitality. We even practice blessing those who persecute us. All these things help us to “live in harmony with each other.”

It takes work to have good relationships. Our broken human flesh gets in the way and twists things all around. Our pride rises up, and we feel neglected and mistreated. We allow things to fester on the inside until we reject people.

Stress and anxiety are always the bi-product of messed-up relationships. This bi-product is why Paul is urging us to live in peace with everyone. Living in peace takes divine help from the Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit, I need You to reveal my misconceptions, weaknesses, and blind spots. Help me to see others the way You see them. Help me to live at peace with everyone.
