Contents of the Test
Some time later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called. “Yes,” he replied. “Here I am.” “Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
Genesis 22:1-2 NLT
Now we get insight into what this test is going to include—sacrifice. And not just any sacrifice, God is asking Abraham to give up the thing he loves the most—his son, Isaac.
At the age of 75, God promised Abraham a son that would be his heir and father a great nation. After waiting for 25 years, God reconfirmed the promise, and then Isaac was born. Now, 15 years later, God wants Abraham to give us his son as a sacrifice.
It’s easy to give up something you don’t like. I’ve given up liver and sauerkraut for most of my life. That is no sacrifice. I could easily give up neckties for the rest of my life—I’ve worn enough neckties to last a lifetime. But giving up these is not a sacrifice. A sacrifice is when you give up something you love—chocolate cake.
You realize there are several contradictions with God’s request. First, God was against murder. Second, Isaac was the son of promise—God promised that a great nation would arise through Isaac.
This is the moment I would wonder if that was really God speaking or some bad pizza. But here was the key, Abraham knew the voice of God. He had become familiar enough with God’s voice to know it was God Who was making the request.
If we want to pass the tests that come against us, we need to learn to discern the voice of God. There are a lot of voices speaking today. Discerning God’s voice takes a lot of time spent reading God’s Word, listening to God’s Spirit in prayer, and connecting with God’s family as we do life together. God’s Word, God’s Spirit, and God’s family become our gauge of God’s voice.
Holy Spirit, help me to discern Your voice. Help me to be willing to make whatever sacrifice You ask because I know it is You asking.
