The Source of Life
“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life. Yes, I am the bread of life! Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died. Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.”
John 6:47-51 NLT
Jesus was teaching on being the bread of life. The people wanted Jesus to perform another miracle to prove that He is the Son of God. The people referred to the miracle from Moses of bringing manna from heaven to them in the wilderness. Jesus was quick to let them know it was not Moses but Father God Who sent the manna in the wilderness.
Jesus also pointed out those who ate the manna in the wilderness eventually died. That manna only provided sustenance for the physical body but could not give eternal life.
Jesus told the people if they eat His bread of life, they will live forever. When Jesus talked about eating His bread or His body, He was speaking about believing in Him. It would be like saying, “They ate up that speaker.” You are saying the people really enjoyed or were inspired by the speaker, not that they physically ate him.
Jesus calls us to believe in Him as our bread of life, to forsake all other options, and decide that our life source is Jesus. Too many people play around with Jesus. They want Him when they are in trouble, but they leave Him on the shelf the rest of the time.
Holy Spirit, please help me to make Jesus the center of my life. Help me daily to draw my life from Your bread.
