The Bread of Life

They answered, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do? After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, ‘Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven. The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

“Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.”

Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

John 6:30-35 NLT

We are still in John, chapter six, in the synagogue in Capernaum the day after Jesus fed the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. The people wanted Jesus to do another miracle to prove Who He claimed to be. They brought up the manna that God gave the children of Israel to eat in Exodus 16. They received fresh manna every morning as they journeyed for forty years to reach the Promised Land.

Jesus reminded them it was not Moses that gave the manna but Father God—His Father. The same Father God that sent Jesus to give them the “true bread from heaven.”

During the discussion, Jesus makes the great declaration, “I am the bread of life.” Jesus declares that He is part of God and has come to earth to offer living bread.

The children of Israel received daily manna for forty years, some 1400 years before Jesus came to earth. That was a great miracle of God’s provision. But it was temporary bread. They received temporary nourishment, but they all died. Jesus is offering a greater bread—the bread of life. When we eat His bread, we will never die.

We eat Jesus’ bread when we believe in Him. It is an act of faith to believe in Jesus. By faith, we declare that Jesus died, rose again, and paid the penalty for our sins. His death and resurrection proved that Jesus was and is the Son of God, Savior of the world, and Lord of all.

Today, I choose to renew my faith in Jesus as God’s bread of life. I choose to declare that Jesus is the Son of God, Savior of the world, and Lord of all.
