To one who listens, valid criticism is like a gold earring or other gold jewelry.
Proverbs 25:12 NLT
Wow—there are some amazing thoughts in this simple passage. What is the purpose of a gold earring or gold jewelry? They make the person more attractive—at least I think that is the purpose.
Solomon says “valid criticism” is something that should make us more attractive. We are actually better because we listen to valid criticism.
To receive valid criticism, we must allow others to be close enough to us to speak into our lives. If we shield ourselves from everyone, we will never have the opportunity to receive valid criticism.
That doesn’t mean we just allow people to attack us and tear us down. It means we have people that love us, want the best for us, and yet have our permission to speak into our lives. They have the right to question our actions, words, and dress. They can question anything and everything in our lives.
As I write today’s devotion, I just had a session with three staff members who critiqued my message for this coming weekend. They have my permission to speak into my life as I prepare to speak this coming weekend. After preaching my message in front of them in an empty room, we spent 45 minutes talking about strong points and weak points. I was better prepared for this weekend because of these three people.
Who speaks into your life?
Holy Spirit, please show me areas of my life where I need to open my life to people. Help me to develop the right relationships to allow the right people to speak into my life.
