The Shepherd’s Work
The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.
Psalm 23:1-3 NLT
David received some great insight into the ministry of Jesus as our Shepherd. We have been studying from John, chapter 10, where Jesus declared, “I Am the good shepherd.” In the Old Testament, David gave us an explanation of some of the Shepherd’s work.
The shepherd is our provider. Because Jesus is my shepherd I “have all that I need.” The shepherd makes sure the sheep have provision for their lives.
The shepherd brings us to a place of peace. We can rest in “green meadows” and “beside peaceful streams.” There is a place of rest when we remind ourselves that Jesus is our good shepherd.
The shepherd also “renews my strength.” There will be moments when we get weary, but when we spend time with our shepherd, He will renew our strength.
The shepherd also guides us to “right paths.” We don’t have to be afraid or full of anxiety over which way to go—we just need to follow the shepherd, and we will find the right paths.
Do you provision? Peace? Strength? Direction? Everything you need is found when you develop an intimate relationship with your shepherd.
Holy Spirit, please help me today to open my life to the Lord Jesus as my shepherd. Help me to stop trying to be in charge of everything and listen to You.
