What’s in Your Heart?
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7 NLT
This passage was written as the prophet Samuel was being led by God to anoint a new king over Israel. God sent him to the house of Jesse in Bethlehem. When Samuel saw the oldest son, Eliab, he was impressed and thought surely Eliab was the one. Then God gave Samuel the instructions in today’s passage.
In the society we live, it seems everything is based on appearance. We work hard to control our weight, choose the right clothes, and post the right selfies. We want to impress people with the right look.
But God is more impressed with our hearts than our best selfie. God is always looking at my heart. Is my heart in the right place? Is my heart full of pride? Anger? Jealously? Criticism? Apathy? The list could go on and on.
What’s in your heart?
The Holy Spirit wants to cleanse our hearts of anything that would hinder God from working through us. Before God works through us, He wants to work in us. He wants to be sure we are a vessel that can stand the pressure of His anointing in our lives.
Holy Spirit, show me my heart and direct me to a pure heart. Help me to allow You to constantly be working on the inside of my life. Help me to serve You fully.
