Staying Under Control

Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.

Proverbs 29:11 NLT

Wow, what truth we have in this passage!

I remember being somewhat of a hot head during my junior high and part of my high school days. It didn’t take much for me to fly off the handle and explode. Perhaps it was my insecurities. Maybe my competitiveness. Or probably a combination of a lot of things, but it was not hard for me to explode.

As I encountered some real struggles in life, I had to learn to control my temper. It was not an easy transition. I spent a lot of time praying about my tendency to explode. There was not one moment of deliverance; it was a gradual work of transformation.

Learning to control my emotions was vital in resolving conflict and leading people. If I can’t control my emotions, I become a spark to set other people off in their emotions. But it is hard to argue with someone who doesn’t want to argue.

If I raise my voice, the other person raises theirs, and before long, we are shouting. Shouting never solves a problem; it just raises your blood pressure.

The wise person is the one who can control their emotions when everyone else is exploding. The one who controls their emotions will always win.

One part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives is self-control. Other parts of the Spirit’s fruit are love, joy, and peace. If we are Spirit-controlled people, we will be self-controlled and demonstrate love, joy, and peace. The Spirit in us is the secret to staying under control.

Holy Spirit, work in me Your love, joy, peace, and self-control. Help me hold my emotions when others are losing theirs. Help me to resolve conflict without losing my emotions.
