Trusting Direction

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

John 16:13 NLT

As followers of Jesus Christ, we have the Holy Spirit living within us. I believe we have the opportunity to grow in our relationship with the Holy Spirit through the baptism in the Spirit just as the early believers received this baptism in Acts, chapter two.

As we open ourselves to the fullness of the Holy Spirit, we can expect the Spirit to be our Guide. When I think of the Spirit as my Guide, I think of my Waze app. I happen to love this app on my phone because it is my constant companion when I drive somewhere.

Recently, I was at a meeting, and as I got in my car to leave, I touched my Waze app and hit my preset home button. I had driven to this location just an hour or so earlier, but I still wanted Waze to guide me home. It was interesting because Waze took me a different way home than the way I came. I discovered an accident had shut down the usual road I would have taken, and traffic was backed up on that route.

Waze knew what I didn’t know. I had to trust Waze to guide me in the best route even though I thought I knew the best route.

We must have this same trust in the Holy Spirit. Even when we think we know the best way to go, we must trust the Spirit to be our Guide. Not only in the big things, but in the little things as well. We must learn to ask the Holy Spirit to guide us.

Recently, I have tried to get in the habit of asking the Holy Spirit about simpler things in my life—where to eat lunch, what schedule to keep for today, who to call or text. The little things add up to the big things in my life.

When we take time for fasting and prayer, we should be careful that we also listen. Ask the Holy Spirit to direct us and then listen for His nudge in our hearts and minds. Eventually, we will learn to discern the nudge of the Spirit.

Holy Spirit, I give You my day. Today, I want You to guide my life. Guide my thoughts, my schedule, my meetings, my everything. Let all I do today agree with Your will and way.
