In Jesus’ Name
At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.
John 16:23-24 NLT
What does it mean to pray “in Jesus’ name?”
When we include the phrase “in Jesus’ name” in our prayers, we are acknowledging our right to approach the throne of heaven is based on the work of Christ on the cross. When Jesus died on the cross, He carried my sins. When He rose victorious over death, sin, and hell, Jesus proved He was the Son of God and Savior of the world. His death paid the price for all my sin and offered me the privilege to be made right with God.
When I come to Father God in prayer, I acknowledge my only right to get to the throne is “in the name of Jesus.” I have no authority or relationship based on my goodness, value, or worth. It is in the name of Jesus that I come to the throne.
A few years back, one of my cousins invited me to play golf with him at his private club. When I arrived at the front gate, I gave them my name and told them I was a guest of my cousin. Immediately, they welcomed me onto the property. When I arrived at the parking lot, I was greeted by someone who called me by name, informed me that my cousin was on the driving range, and showed me where to go. They offered me water and sodas and never once did anyone ask for payment. Everything was paid for by my cousin because this was a private club. It was all on his tab.
I had no membership at the club—but because I had his permission to use his name, I had access to everything without cost. This is the privilege we have in prayer when we say, “in Jesus’ name.” It is a reminder that Jesus paid it all. We have no standing ourselves. He is the One that we look to for every answer to our prayers.
Holy Spirit, help me today to remember the price that Jesus paid for my sins. Help me to be thankful for the privilege of approaching the throne of heaven in the name of Jesus.
