And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
Philippians 4:8 NLT
I know this is a passage I have written several devotions on this year, but it seems to be so appropriate to keep reminding us to fix our thoughts. The messages we are getting from social media and the news media seem to be so negative we have to work really hard to fix our thoughts on the positive.
As I write this devotion, I just spent about an hour yesterday with a couple in ministry struggling with so many negative thoughts right now. They have not seen much fruit from their ministry during this season and struggle to find positive things. We talked about the importance of fixing our thoughts.
Here is a little formula that seems to work for me. First, ask God to help you identify negative thoughts. We often don’t see our thoughts clearly. The Holy Spirit can show us where we are allowing negative thoughts to infiltrate our thinking.
Secondly, we need to reject negative thoughts. We need to make a conscious effort to stop the negative thoughts from taking root in our minds. We can’t control them coming, but we can control them staying.
Finally, we must replace the negative thoughts. I believe it is impossible to overcome negative thoughts simply by rejecting them. We must replace them.
I like what one person said, “When you’re tempted to complain, blame, or shame, use the power God has given you to refrain.” Just stop the bad thoughts by replacing them with good thoughts.
For instance, instead of saying, “No one loves me,” replace it with, “There are people who love me but most importantly, God loves me.” How about instead of, “I’ll never be able to lose the weight/overcome the addiction/find someone to love me” with “I can do all things through Christ Who loves me.”
I believe it is crucial to simply replace the truth you think with a higher truth—the Word of God. Memorize God’s Word and speak His Word over your life. Make it a daily habit to confess God’s Word over your life. That is replacing your thoughts with God’s thoughts.
Holy Spirit, please help me to see the negative thought patterns in my life. Help me to stop those negative thoughts and replace them with Your truth. Help me to cleanse my mind with the Word of God daily.
