A Promise for the Process
After the death of Moses the Lord’s servant, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant. He said, “Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people, the Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them.
Joshua 1:1-2 NLT
The time has come for Joshua to assume leadership of the nation of Israel. Joshua has been in training for about forty years. It must have seemed like an eternity to wait that long. But now the time is here.
It is interesting to note that God commissions Joshua to lead the people into the Promised Land, and God also gives him a promise for the process. The promise is that God is giving them the land.
Note, God did not say “I have given you” but “I am giving” you the land. There is a process in acquiring the land. Joshua will have to seek God for direction; he is going to have to fight some giants; he is going to have to deal with sin in the camp, and he is going to have to make tough decisions. It is not going to come automatically.
It is the same in our lives. We get a direction from God for a career, a relationship, a job, a business to start, a place to raise our children, etc. But it is not automatic. We don’t make one decision of commitment to the process, and then everything falls into place. We make daily little decisions that keep up in line with God’s plan. We fight daily battles within ourselves and with others.
The work of God in us and through us is always a battle. We can never shift into neutral and just coast our way to victory. We have to be intentional about driving forward daily.
Are there some areas of your life that you have shifted into neutral and stopped pushing forward? Today is a good day to get life into gear and start moving forward to your promised land.
Holy Spirit, show me areas where I have become lazy or slacked off in my pursuit of God’s promises for my life. Help me today to take a step forward.
