Determining Your Future

So Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute and her relatives who were with her in the house, because she had hidden the spies Joshua sent to Jericho. And she lives among the Israelites to this day.

Joshua 6:25 NLT

Almost as a footnote to the story of the destruction of Jericho was this passage about Rahab, the prostitute. Three times in this chapter, she is mentioned. She was the woman who hid the two spies who came to check out Jericho before the Israelites began their walk around the city.

Joshua reminded the spies of their promise to keep her and all in her house safe. When the walls collapsed, the two spies got Rahab and her family from her home. They took her to safety. And she lived among the Israelites.

But there is more to the story. In the New Testament book of Matthew, Rahab’s name shows up again. This time it is in connection with the genealogy of Jesus. Yes, Rahab finds herself one of only three women mentioned in the genealogy (Jewish genealogies did not usually include women). Each of the three women mentioned is a Gentile.

Rahab evidently not only stayed with the Israelites, but she also put her faith in their God, fell in love, got married, and became the great-great-grandmother of King David and in the genealogy of Jesus. Wow, God doesn’t allow our past to determine our future!

The labels that others, or yourself, have put on you do not limit your future. Your future is only limited by your faith in God. There is a future for you. God has a plan for your life.

Father God, I give You thanks that You do not make my past determine my future. Thanks that You have a plan for me. Help me get into alignment with Your plan.
