Two Battles

Moses commanded Joshua, “Choose some men to go out and fight the army of Amalek for us. Tomorrow, I will stand at the top of the hill, holding the staff of God in my hand.” So Joshua did what Moses had commanded and fought the army of Amalek. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of a nearby hill. As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage. Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. As a result, Joshua overwhelmed the army of Amalek in battle.

Exodus 17:9-13 NLT

In this passage, Joshua is introduced to us for the first time in the Bible. Moses selects Joshua to lead the army and gives him instructions to choose the men to fight against the army of Amalek. There must have been something about him that let Moses know Joshua was a leader and warrior.

But Moses doesn’t send Joshua to fight alone. Moses tells Joshua that he is going to the top of the hill and hold up the staff of God. This posture was a form of intercession. Moses was going to be interceding for Joshua. Joshua would have to fight the battle in the physical while Moses fought it in the spiritual.

This battle was all training for later in life when Joshua would have to lead the nation into the Promised Land and fight the inhabitants of the land. Joshua would remember there is always a connection between the physical and the spiritual. It takes both to win victories.

The same is true today. When we are fighting for our marriages, our children, our health, our finances, our community, or our nation, there must be spiritual intercession, but there is also physical work we need to do. We need to be proactive to take the necessary steps to win the battle.

What steps might God be asking you to take to win a battle in your life?

Holy Spirit, show me what I need to do to win the battle in my life. Help me to be willing to fight and pray.
