Two of the men who had explored the land, Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, tore their clothing. They said to all the people of Israel, “The land we traveled through and explored is a wonderful land! And if the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. It is a rich land flowing with milk and honey. Do not rebel against the Lord, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the Lord is with us! Don’t be afraid of them!”

Numbers 14:6-9 NLT

Moses sent twelve spies to check out the Promised Land. They all came back with reports of great abundance in the land. But ten spies talked of giants in the land and reported they felt like grasshoppers compared to the people who lived in the land. Their report planted great fear in the people.

Then we meet Joshua and Caleb—the other two spies. They got angry at the bad report the other spies gave. They told the people that God is with them and God will take them safely into the land. They didn’t deny the presence of giants—they just chose to look at the size of their God instead of the size of their opposition.

Whatever we focus on will always determine the choices we make. If we focus on our problems and difficulties, we will live in fear and never move forward. Moving forward requires a faith that God is bigger than our problems.

This first introduction to Joshua helps us see an insight into his life. From the very beginning, Joshua was a man who chose to put his faith in the size of his God, not the size of his problems.

Holy Spirit, please help me to keep my focus on You. Help me to remember that You are bigger than anything I will face today. With You, I will always be victorious.
