The Shepherds, Curious Observers

When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.

Luke 2:15-20 NLT

The shepherds who got the visit from the angels were quick to obey. Their curiosity drove them to discover the baby, Jesus. When we are honestly curious, we can be forced to discover amazing truth, especially if we channel that curiosity through God’s Word. When we allow God’s Word to spark our interest, we are driven to seek a greater truth.

Once we find that truth, we are driven to share it with others. You can’t help but talk about something—or Someone—who changed your life. The shepherds “told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said.”

Have we been so impacted by the birth of Jesus in our hearts that we tell everyone?

In contrast, Mary “kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often.” I don’t think this was a lack of faith or desire for others to experience this miracle. I think it was deeply personal and would have seemed self-promoting to say she was the mother of God’s Son. She was young and still trying to grasp what was going on.

God does some things in us that requires us to think deeply and reflect on them before we go public with that information. At the initial moment, we don’t understand them enough to fully explain them to others.

Holy Spirit, help me to be joyful in telling others what You have done in me. Help me to also reflect on what You are doing that I don’t fully understand.
