Witness by Doing
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
Matthew 5:14-16 NLT
Being a witness is more than what I say, it is also about what I do. People want to see my life before they hear my witness. Jesus said, “let your good deeds shine out for all to see.” This tells me there should be something in my life that others can see.
I don’t believe we do good deeds to show off to people—most people can spot a fake. But when we do good things, people will notice. When we offer a listening ear to someone who is hurting. When we take a meal to someone who’s sick. When we go out of our way to help someone else. People see God’s love in our practical service to others.
In our busy world, we sometimes miss the opportunities God puts in our lives. We must be intentional about asking the Holy Spirit to show us people in need around us. We need to ask how we can serve someone else.
Holy Spirit, help me to be Your light in my dark world. Help me to serve others through Your life in me. Break me out of my selfishness.
