Growing in Grace and Knowledge

You already know these things, dear friends. So be on guard; then you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing. Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen.

2 Peter 3:17-18 NLT

This is the conclusion of Peter’s second letter. In the previous verses, he warns people about those who twist the Scriptures and try to distort the truth. He reminds his readers to be on their guard, so they don’t fall into errors. The goal is to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Notice that being a follower of Jesus is about growing in grace and knowledge. Choosing to become a follower of Jesus doesn’t mean I instantly am perfect and treat everyone with grace. Instead, it opens the door in my life to start a growth process to be more like Jesus.

Following Jesus is a lifelong process of growing into His image. There will be many times in my journey when I blow it and have regrets and shame. But God’s grace keeps pulling me to be more like Jesus.

I’m not saying sin is okay. We should all strive to be free of sin and live a holy life. But the reality is that the Holy Spirit is continually working in us to perfect the image of Jesus in our lives. Just when we get one area corrected, He reveals another area that needs attention. It is a lifelong quest to understand grace and know Jesus better.

Part of the process is learning to say no to sin. The other part of the process is saying yes to Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Learning to see people the way Jesus sees them. Learning to treat people the way Jesus wants them to be treated. Learning to live in peace and contentment. These all require growing into them.

Holy Spirit, help me today in my growth journey. Help me to be more like Jesus. Help me to treat others with grace.
