Ready for Harvest
“You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.”
John 4:35 NLT
Jesus has just had a conversation with a Samaritan woman at a well. The disciples returned with food and wondered why Jesus was talking to a woman—but they dared not ask Him. The woman went into town to tell everyone about meeting Jesus because she believed He was the Messiah.
Then Jesus had a conversation with the disciples and made this statement, “wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.” Think about this for a moment. The disciples had just come from the town where this lady was now telling everyone about Jesus. They purchased food from people in the town. Yet, they didn’t tell anyone about Jesus. They didn’t see the town as a place worthy of sharing Jesus.
Jesus had to tell them to “wake up and look around.” I wonder if Jesus would say the same to us today.
In the following verses, we will learn the town turns out to hear Jesus and many are transformed by their encounter with Jesus. They were ready for harvest—but the disciples missed it. A woman was the catalyst.
What harvest fields do we miss every day?
Holy Spirit, please help me to wake up and see the fields that are ripe around me. Help me see people the way You do.
