Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT
Paul wrote these words to the believers in the city of Corinth. The city was a city full of sailors because it was a major port city. On the hill outside the city was a temple to a god of sexuality. Some historians have said there were as many as one thousand priestesses and prostitutes who worked in the temple.
Paul drew on that temple image to remind the followers of Christ that their bodies were the temple of the Holy Spirit. Because their bodies were the temple of the Holy Spirit, they were to honor God with their bodies.
There were some in Paul’s day who taught that the body and spirit were totally separate and what you did with your body did not impact your spirit. Paul attacked this teaching when he stated that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. He wanted his readers to know that whatever we do with our bodies impacts the Spirit of God Who lives in us.
This passage should remind us that whatever we say and do should be done by remembering that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Our body is not our own to do with as we wish. Our bodies belong to the Lord Jesus.
Holy Spirit, help me to control my body and present my body to You as holy for Your service.
