“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.”

Matthew 5:13 NLT

We have discussed in the last three days the three functions of salt—salt preserves, enhances, and entices. Now, let’s shift our focus to the two problems with salt.

The first problem is that salt loses its flavor. Another translation says its “saltiness” or “savor” in the old King James. Losing its flavor is what happens when salt is no longer effective.

Salt is the compound of sodium chloride. It is a stable compound meaning its effectiveness does not diminish with time. But in the ancient world, salt was harvested from marshes and places where often there were foreign substances mixed in with the pure salt. If these impurities were not removed, the salt would lose its effectiveness because its potency was diluted.

There are a lot of followers of Christ who have allowed their lives to be diluted with things that shouldn’t be in their lives. Sometimes, people have tried so much to be acceptable to the world that we have become just like the world. Why would the world be drawn to my Jesus if I’m just as messed up as they are?

If my relationships are messed up, my family is in shambles, my finances are horrible, and my personal discipline is in the tank, why would anyone want to have what I claim to have?

People are attracted by someone who is unique and different. Someone who has figured out how to have joy in the midst of pain, hope in the midst of despair, and peace in the midst of chaos.

When we yield our hearts to the Holy Spirit, He will release the fruit of the Spirit into our lives. We will not be perfect—but we can have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Let’s be sure we don’t lose our saltiness!

Holy Spirit, please work in my life to restore my saltiness. I want to be a good representative of You to my world.
