“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.”
Matthew 5:13 NLT
Let’s talk about the second function of salt. Salt not only preserves (yesterday’s devotion), but it also enhances.
I love to put salt on my food to enhance its flavor. Sometimes, I use salt to cover up the flavor that is unpleasant. I remember some missions trips I went on where I ate stuff that was a mystery to me. By adding enough salt, I could stomach that which was different to me.
As followers of Christ, we are enhancers for our world. There are many people around us suffering and hurting. For many, life is difficult and unpleasant. They struggle just to keep going another day. God’s presence in us allows us to be His presence in a hurting world. We can bring joy into sorrow. We can bring peace into chaos. We can bring hope into despair.
Our presence should be enhancing the lives of those around us. People should want to be around us because we improve their lives. We are not there to judge, condemn, or criticize. We are present in people’s lives to give them hope.
I’m known some Christians I didn’t want to be around. They were always angry at something or someone. They had a dark cloud that seemed to hang over them. There was no salt in their lives. I think those people were fake Christians. They definitely were not following my Jesus.
Holy Spirit, help me to be the salt that enhances my world through Your presence in me. Change me from the inside out so that I can represent You to my world.
