On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
Acts of the Apostles 2:1-4 NLT
Jesus had promised His followers a special baptism that would empower them to be bold witnesses. The disciples had no historical reference for this promised empowerment. They spent about forty days in prayer in obedience to Jesus’ command to wait in Jerusalem until they received the baptism, or infilling, of the Holy Spirit.
After such a long waiting period of prayer, they had a historic encounter with the power of God through the release of the Holy Spirit in a new way. Sounds of wind, flames of fire, and tongues were all physical manifestations of this new experience. Throughout the remainder of the book of Acts, the only recurring manifestation of the Spirit’s empowerment was tongues.
I believe that every follower of Christ can have this same empowerment in our lives. I believe it is separate from our salvation experience. I believe it is a gift from God—not something we earn or become worthy to receive. It is a gift available to those who seek the fullness of the Spirit in our lives.
In my personal life, I daily depend on my prayer language of tongues as a way to communicate with God. I encourage every believer to seek the fullness of Spirit in their life. Let’s not do life in our wisdom, talents, gifts, or abilities. Let’s invite the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us in powerful ways.
Holy Spirit, I want to receive everything You have for me. I want to live in the power and boldness You bring. I invite You to fill my life in new ways today.
