Ordinary to Extraordinary

The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.

Acts of the Apostles 4:13 NLT

I have clung with hope to this scripture for over 40 years. Let me unwrap the why.

God used Peter and John to do a great miracle. The religious leaders got upset because they were claiming the miracle was done in the name of Jesus. Peter and John claimed that God raised Jesus from the dead and rightly accused the religious leaders of crucifying Jesus.

The religious leaders are used to everyone being scared of them, but Peter and John are not afraid. These same two guys who were afraid to admit knowing Jesus just a few days earlier are now boldly telling everyone Jesus is the risen Lord.

Here is where I get excited. The religious leaders knew Peter and John were “ordinary men with no special training,” but they were “men who had been with Jesus.”

“Ordinary men”—that’s the kind of people God uses when the Holy Spirit empowers them. Ordinary men empowered by the Spirit become extraordinary. They become instruments for God to use in miraculous ways.

That means there is hope for me—and you. When I felt God calling me to ministry, I didn’t think I could offer much. I always wanted to be able to sing or play an instrument to be used by God. This passage gave me hope. God can use ordinary people when we spend time with Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to fill our lives.

Holy Spirit, I want to be filled with Your presence today. I want to live in Your fullness. I want to spend time with You and be transformed by You.
